Dried cherries
Dried cherries are a type of fruit that can be found in both dried as well as fresh form. Dried cherries come from the same types of fruits as regular cherries but have been heated to remove water from them.
They can be sickly sweet or tart depending on whether sweeteners are added.
What if you don’t want to use to dried cherries or don’t have any on hand… what alternatives can you use for dried cherries in recipes?
The usual suspects….
Raisins
A raisin is a grape that has been dried out, usually to be used as a food item. They’re sweet and chewy, and an old-fashioned tradition during the Christmas holiday season.
Keep in mind there are a good number of different types of raisins such as:
- Currants,
- Golden raisins,
- Dark raisins,
- Sultanas,
- Muskat,
- Monukka.
Dried cranberries (Craisins)
Dried cranberries are dehydrated cranberries. Very similar to raisins.
Dried cranberries are a favorite ingredient in many holiday recipes, from traditional fruitcake to rich gingerbread. They’re a healthy alternative to raisins, and they add a little more punch to cookies and muffins.
Are dried cherries the same as craisins? No, they are not. Craisins are dried cranberries.
Prunes
Prunes are dried plums–technically, prunes are any dried fruit.
Dried blueberries
Blueberries, while some might know their name, most people do not know what they are. They are actually a type of berry and even an edible fruit that contains many healthy nutrients such as antioxidants and bioflavonoids.
Dried currants
Currants are little, sweet berries that grow on bushes. They come in shades of red, black, and white.

I also like dried nectarines. I believe any dried softer fruit can serve as a substitute for dried cherries in recipes.
